Grizzly Comeback

About one month ago, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced the delisting of Yellowstone grizzly bears. This is because this population has rebounded from barely 100 bears in that area to over 700 bears. I was talking with Idaho Fish and Game's Mike Keckler about this and I wondered why the population wasn’t even greater given that the grizzly must be at the very top of the food chain. "They are an apex predator. Nothing would prey on them other than perhaps wolves. That is very unlikely. But when it comes to bears, things happen. Sometimes they get hit by a car, sometimes they can be killed by other bears, sometimes one has to be taken out if it made an attack on human beings. It is all part of what is called the overall mortality that affect grizzly bears and grizzly bears are watched, most of them have callers on them, we know how many are out there and they have been studying them for some time.”
