Good friend Scotty Cyr talked to me regarding his philosophy about hunting, archery, rifles and most importantly the ethics involved in our great sport. “I’ve taken a few animals in my time, a beautiful elk last year. He went maybe 25 yards and that was it. It was over. If you hit them correctly and that arrow pierces through, it is devastating. It is amazing how quick it is. A lot of people say the animal is going to suffer but if you make a good shot it is over quickly, as quickly as a gun. I use a rifle a little bit but as the years go on, I enjoy the archery more and more. It’s not so much about taking an animal as it is trying to get close. I’m getting old and sometimes I say to myself, do I really want to work this hard? Maybe don’t even notch my arrow. When you're young, you’re willing to work but when you get older you can’t realize how important it is to be smart out there. Be conscientious of what you are doing. You don’t want to take something and have it waste. That’s not good for anything. Maybe the coyotes but it’s not an ethical thing to do out there.
