Chokes, and I’m not talking about what might happen to a quarterback in the final seconds of a tight game. I’m talking waterfowl hunting. The predictions for the 2018 fall flight of ducks and geese should get any smoothbore enthusiast excited. We are living in the "good old days" and this fall is likely going to be the best any waterfowl hunter has ever seen.

The fact there are more birds in the migration than ever before does not equate to bringing more home on your hunting excursions. Don't leave success to chance. Instead, improve your shotgun success by maximizing your effective pattern on ducks and geese.

Chokes will increase your range and hitting power no matter what shot size you prefer. Chokes were designed to maximize range when shooting steel shot. Here’s Everett with his description of “choke power”. “What it does at the end of the barrel is it tends to funnel that pattern of BBs. There are minor changes in them. They go from full, modified, improved to the three basic ones, then they start getting crazy. There are probably 15 other different choke sizes and sporting guys. But when it tries to do is contain the BBs that are ejected out of that barrel into a pattern so that you can control it. If you need a wider pattern, you can open it up completely or if you want a narrow pattern you can go with that.
