The recently proposed Homestead Act aims to transfer 640 million acres of America's public lands to state control, and this would almost certainly lead to the sale of the remaining public land—just like the millions of public acres that states have already sold off. As the fight for our federal public lands intensifies, two businessmen with very different customer bases came together to raise awareness of what's at stake for America's hunters, anglers, and sporting heritage. Yvon Chouinard (founder of outdoor retailer Patagonia) and Kenton Carruth (co-founder of hunting gear company First Lite) spoke to Hal Herring about their views on conservation. On the fight to preserve our public lands, Chouinard says: "We need to stop being negative, stop being on the defensive, get together and win this fight."
