Experienced outdoorsman and member of our Sportsmans Spotlight team, Tommy Allen, told me about his experience skin diving and spearfishing during a vacation in Hawaii. Go over this with me a little bit.

You get to Hawaii you want to go spear fishing, you want to go traditional fishing, you don't have to apply for a license? You know, that's the great thing about is you don't have to have a fishing tag and I'm used to Washington State and Oregon where you have to have a Columbia River endorse and have to this, have to that, catch record card, all the bells and whistles, have to read the regs in-depth to know what kind of fish you can keep and can't keep and clip fins on then native fish they don't have those they don't have the regulations in Hawaii they're pretty relaxed about it. There's a few regulations but for the most part everything's fair game.

Ok. So were you outfitted with a scuba or the air tanks and the whole thing or were you snorkeling.

You that's a good question. I just brought my fins and a mask and I don't dive real deep I would stick around maybe the max the 16 feet range as far as I'd go down to try and grab for stuff but I just would go out around the reef with my spear gun. And if I saw something that was trying to go after like goatfish, those fish are really good. And so I just tried to target certain fish and kind of rule thumb there's like anything else. You only get what you can eat that night. You get a fish, bring them all up and we just take them to the resort and they a barbecue outside a little bit of butter and seizing on it and cook with tinfoil. And it was amazing. It tastes like lobster recommendation.
