Washington Ag Today September 30, 2011 Some leaders in Washington state agriculture will be in Washington D.C. early next week.

Barstow: “Several of us are going back to present a group presentation to staff from the entire Washington state delegation.”

That’s Ben Barstow, President of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers, a member of the Presidents Group, which is comprised of the heads of various commodity and farm organizations in the state. He says Monday’s presentation to the congressional staffers will be on the farm bill and in preparation the ag leaders went over every title of the existing law.

Barstow: “And picked out those items that were a concern to everybody around the table that day. There are a lot of issues that are important to apple growers and wheat growers, and cattlemen and potato growers. We all share a lot of issues in common.”

Barstow has a particular topic he will make a presentation on.

Barstow: “I’ll be talking to the delegation about the importance of international trade and that we encourage them to come out of this whole process with a farm bill that is as WTO compliant as we currently are, and hopefully even better than we are today.”

Research is another farm bill topic on the agenda and beyond that there are issues such as immigration and labor and the Clean Water Act.

Barstow says everything is pretty much up in the air right now regarding the next farm bill.
