Agribusiness Update For Wednesday 1/9/13

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has released two rules to help prevent foodborne illness. FDA says the proposed rules implement the Food Safety Modernization Act and are available for public comment for the next 120 days. According to FDA - the first proposed rule would require makers of food to be sold in the U.S. to develop a formal plan for preventing their food products from causing foodborne illness.

An environmental activist who helped start the anti-GM movement back in the mid-1990s has now apologized for his role in demonizing genetically modified crops. Mark Lynas says he has come to realize GM crops are safe to eat and are essential to feeding a growing world population.

USDA has ranked the brown marmorated stink bug as its top invasive insect of interest. The pest is a major economic threat to orchard fruits, garden vegetables and row crops and is now found in at least 39 states.
