Agribusiness Update for Monday 5/27/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I’m Greg Martin...

Accidental exposure to ammonia has led to the death of a Simplot subcontractor. 23-year-old Derrick E. Martinez of Garden City, Kan., died Wednesday after being found unconscious in a mobile testing trailer at the plant near Pocatella. Martinez was flown to a Utah hospital where he died. Martinez worked for a Simplot subcontractor, Blick's Phosphate Conversion.

The Senate will not be back in session until after this Memorial holiday which means the next vote on the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2013 is scheduled for Monday, June 3rd. Last week Senators voted on three amendments voting down the amendment to end crop insurance subsidies for tobacco. They did approve an amendment to authorize the use of the insurance fund to reduce fraud and maintain crop insurance program integrity.

And speaking of the farm bill, Senators did not add an amendment to the farm bill to give states clear authority to require labels on food or beverages made with genetically modified ingredients. Only 27 Senators voted in favor of the amendment - while 71 voted against it.

That’s today’s Agribusiness Update from the Ag Information Network.
