If the House can’t reach agreement on a bill to reauthorize the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program before leaving for the August recess - House Agriculture Committee Chair Frank Lucas says the farm bill conference should proceed. When members left Washington Thursday - there were no apparent plans to take up a nutrition bill in the final days before the recess.

According to new Environmental Protection Agency figures - the U.S. biodiesel industry reached a new production record for the first half of the year and is on pace for its best year ever. The EPA has reported that biodiesel producers across the country have produced more than 636-million gallons through the end of June.

North America’s largest collection of fungi is maintained by USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists. The collection - which started with fewer than three-thousand specimens in 1885 - contains more than a million reference specimens. The fungal research will help plant pathologists accurately identify the cause of the disease in specialty crops and help plant quarantine officials identify disease-causing fungi.
