Agribusiness Update for Thursday 8/1/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I’m Greg Martin...

More than 400 leading U.S. businesses and advocacy organizations - including the American Farm Bureau Federation - sent a letter to U.S. House Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi calling on the House to enact immigration reform legislation. These organizations says reform of an outdated, broken immigration system is essential if the U.S. is to achieve a fully revitalized economy providing rewarding, lasting jobs and opportunities for all Americans.

All outdoor fires on lands protected by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources have now been banned. Hot and dry conditions have made the potential for wildfire unusually high on both sides of the Cascade Mountains. Significant demands are being placed upon our fire suppression resources from both regional and statewide firefighting efforts.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced that projects in 30 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico will be funded to support small and emerging rural businesses. The funding was made available through the Rural Business Enterprise Grant program, which promotes development of small and emerging businesses in rural areas.
