Agribusiness Update for Friday 8/2/13

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a rule to modernize Clean Water Act reporting processes for facilities subject to reporting requirements by converting to an electronic data reporting system. This proposed rule would make facility-specific information accessible to the public through EPA’s website.

Canada’s Agriculture Minister told more than 100 U.S. Grains Council delegates this week that Canada and the U.S. must avoid a thickening at the border if open, cross-border trade is to continue between the two nations. He said unscientific measures that unnecessarily restrict trade must be rooted out and cited continued support of mandatory country-of-origin labeling as a political hurdle.

The Humane Society of the United States wants to ensure the final farm bill does not include the provision that would prohibit states from regulating the sale of farm products from other states due to objections about how they were produced. The provision was sponsored by Iowa Representative Steve King - and HSUS is launching a major campaign to urge conferees to remove it from the final piece of legislation.
