Agribusiness Update for Thursday 08/22/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I’m Greg Martin...

Two wolves have chased 176 sheep to death at a southeastern Idaho ranch. 10 of the animals died of bite wounds while one was partially consumed. Most of the animals died from asphyxiation. One Idaho official says it is the single largest loss by wolves ever recorded in one instance in the state.

The Canadian government yesterday asked the WTO for a new review of Country-of-Origin Labeling. The issues raised by the Canadian government are issues between two sovereign countries. While Canada has the right to seek a determination on whether the action by the U.S. is consistent with U.S. obligations.

USDA says the New York TImes story about the two-day computer system failure that networks inspectors at meatpacking and processing plants across the country earlier this month was exaggerated and did not accurately represent the state of meat inspection during the system’s downtime. Inspectors were forced to use a paper system for documenting sample collection and other tasks - but overall - they went about their normal inspection routines with no additional risk to consumers.
