Agribusiness Update for Thursday 09/05/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I'm Greg Martin... The American Meat Institute Foundation has released a new video with tips for thermometer usage in meat and poultry products for September - National Food Safety Education Month. AMIF Chief Scientist Betsy Booren says people often believe they can tell when meat or poultry is cooked by looking at the color or touching it - but she says using a thermometer is the only way to truly ensure safety. The National Coalition for Food and Agricultural Research will present research on how agroforestry is a tool to building more climate-ready farm and ranch operations on Monday. The presentation provides an excellent example of the value of federally funded food and agricultural research, extension and education in producing the scientific outcomes and outreach needed to meet 21st Century challenges and opportunities. USDA Plant Physiologist Gregory Glenn and colleagues have developed an experimental gel that could offer better, more affordable protection for homes from forest or brushland wildfires. Preliminary tests suggest a quarter-inch layer of the gel could protect a wood-based home siding for up to 30-minutes - which could be enough to save a house. That's today's Agribusiness Update from the Ag Information Network.
