Agribusiness Update for Friday 10/18/13

The leaders of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees met Wednesday and made plans for the farm bill conference. According to a spokeswoman for House Ag Committee Chair Frank Lucas - the first formal conference meeting could be scheduled as early as next week depending on the House and Senate schedules. The House and Senate take turns chairing farm bill conferences.

On the 40th anniversary of the oil embargo of 1973 - Growth Energy CEO Tom Buis notes the nation is still dangerously addicted to foreign oil. In reflecting on the anniversary - he says we should recognize that it's futile to put all our eggs in one basked. Buis says we need diverse policy that helps shield us from the price hikes, supply shortages, shocks and the whims of foreign governments.

More than 50 state and national dairy and farm organizations have joined together to urge congressional farm bill conferees to adopt the Senate's Dairy Security Act (DSA), because it offers farmers the most effective safety net for the future. The groups expressed their support in a joint letter sent yesterday to the Senate and House members who will decide the fate of the 2013 farm bill.
