Agribusiness Update for Tuesday 07/22/14

This is the Agribusiness Update...I'm Greg Martin...

In February 2013 - the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service proposed sharing information with state regulators about genetically engineered organisms released in their jurisdictions. Now USDA has withdrawn this rule because it found potential vulnerabilities that would have put farmers' businesses at risk. While confidential business information is protected from mandatory public disclosure - USDA conducted an in-depth review of the Freedom of Information Act and determined disclosure of this information may constitute a waiver of this FOIA exemption.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has declared August 3 through 9, 2014, "National Farmers Market Week". Throughout the week, USDA will celebrate our nation's thousands of farmers markets, farmers who make them possible and the communities that host them. The declaration was made via an official proclamation signed by Secretary Vilsack. This year marks the 15th Annual National Farmers Market Week recognizing the important role that farmers markets play in the agricultural and food economy.

That's today's Agribusiness Update from the Ag Information Network.
