Agribusiness Update for Thursday 04/23/15

The highly pathogenic H5N2 strain of avian influenza has now impacted 5.3-million laying hens on an Iowa egg operation. The operation represents about 1.5-percent of the total layer population in the United States. Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, says the egg farm is a significant producer and highlights how important it is that everything possible is done to contain the disease and work to prevent its spread. The operation has been quarantined and all birds will be destroyed.

Senator Maria Cantwell from Washington State had a message for potential presidential candidates regarding the Ex-Im Bank. She said quote: "Could you please tell the Republican presidential candidates that they are wrong about the Ex-Im Bank?" She was talking to U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Donohue who agreed that the Export-Import Bank is important to American industry and "thousands and thousands of small companies. The Ex-Im Bank authorized 3,340 small-business transactions in fiscal year 2014 and helps U.S. companies compete in an international market.
