Idaho Barley commission administrator Kelly Olson discussed checkoff dollars with me. "At our recent board meeting, the board discussed what the future needs might be for funding and that relates back to the check off rate. We have authority, under our statute, to set the check off rate anywhere from 2 to 4 cents per hundredweight of barley at the first point of sale. Right now we are at 3 cents, that was raised four years ago in order to fund a $1 million research endowment at the University of Idaho and in this new fiscal year 2018 that begins July 1, we will conclude our final payment for that endowment and that is what really drove that increase in assessment. The board felt it was very important to engage in a thorough evaluation of future funding needs which might include some very strategic continuing investments in research, it might mean other kinds of important funding and priorities.”
