Serving Up Potato Bars

Serving Up Potato Bars. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

Salad bars and potato bars are becoming a popular item in schools and according to Ryan Holterhoff, Director of Marketing & Industry Affairs with the Washington State Potato Commission they are trying to help support the trend.

HOLTERHOFF: Yes, the Washington State Potato Commission in conjunction with a program that the US Potato Board is doing is looking at donating 20 salad bars, potato friendly salad bars to school districts throughout the State of Washington this upcoming year.

Holterhoff says he recently attended a school nutrition conference.

HOLTERHOFF: With school nutrition directors and food service directors from public schools throughout the state and make them aware of it. We had one of the salad bars there on display, very well received and just an exciting opportunity to be able to give back to our communities but also to get kids and the school directors thinking differently about how to be able to incorporate potatoes in salad bars and just overall get kids eating more fruits and vegetables.

The salad bars are the physical units that hold all the fresh products and include sneeze shields. He discusses how to get one.

HOLTERHOFF: We have a form that we have shared and sent out to most of the school districts and if one didn't receive it they're welcome to contact us and they're just able to fill that out and we'll take those into consideration and then be able to share 20 of those this year and hopefully more next year.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
