01/05/05 CAFO hearings

Washington Ag January 5, 2004 A series of hearings get underway tonite that will outline what some animal feeding operations must to do protect water quality under a new general permit being proposed by the Washington Department of Ecology. Jack Field, executive of the Washington Cattlemen's Association says livestock producers are encouraged to attend these workshops and public hearings on concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs. Field: "Not just cattlemen but every livestock producer in Washington, if they have any questions, please attend one of these hearings and get their questions and concerns aired out now because in January of 2007 everyone has to be in compliance, whether you are a cattleman, dairyman, sheep producer, whatever your operation we all need to abide by the law. The best way to do that is if we all understand and know what we are up against." All the meetings begin at six pm and the first is tonight in Yakima at the Yakima Area Arboretum. Then tomorrow, Thursday, in Spokane at Spokane Falls Community College Student Union Building. Next week, sessions will be held January 10th in Mount Vernon at the Skagit County PUD and on January 11th in Longview at the Cowlitz County PUD, all at six p.m. I'm Bob Hoff.
