08/05/05 Cougar incident reports online

Wash Ag August 5, 2005 Reports of cougar interactions with people, pets and livestock in Washington state are now available online through the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website. Sean Carrell, who is the problem wildlife coordinator for the state, says the new database was created at the direction of the Washington State Legislature when House Bill 1832 was signed into law. Carrell: "What that law stated is that it directed the department to post on its internet website known details of all cougar-human, cougar-pet or cougar-livestock interactions within ten days of receiving that actual report. Posted material could include, but wasn't limited to, the location, time of all the reported sightings, and known details of any of the cougar-livestock incidents." Interactions between a cougar or bear may be reported by calling a Department of Fish and Wildlife hotline at 1-800-477-6224. Governor Gregoire has made three appointments to the Livestock Nutrient Management Program which provides guidance to the livestock industry regarding their responsibilities under federal and state law to protect water quality. Appointed were Lynn Bahrych of Shaw Island who is on the Conservation Commission, Chris Cheney of Onalaska nominated by the Washington Fryer Commission, and Chad Henneman of Soap Lake nominated by the Cattle Producers of Washington.
