09/23/05 Governor`s trade mission promotes ag

Washington Ag September 23, 2005 Governor Christine Gregoire is currently leading a trade mission in Asia that among other things is promoting Washington agricultural products. The group has been in Japan where the Governor's office says discussions with local officials covered Washington cherries and beef and included a promotional event for cherries. The trade mission is also going to Beijing and Shanghai, China. The Washington Wheat Commission approved a motion at its September meeting to have a committee look at consolidating operations with the Washington Barley Commission. Wheat Commissioner Hal Johnson says the focus is on cost-savings. Johnson: "You are probably aware that discussions have been going on for some time. It was basically a feeling that it was time to maybe begin to formalize some of the thoughts we've had and some of the discussions and see if we can begin to make it so, so to speak." The previous discussions had also included the possibility of a consolidation with the Washington Association of Wheat Growers but Johnson says that's a difficult match that needs more examination. The Cattle Producers of Washington is holding its Family Fun Day tomorrow in the City Park at Ritzville. The potluck with barbecued burgers begins at one pm and there will be a fund raiser auction, plus games for the kids and visits with local politicians. I'm Bob Hoff.
