10/13/05 Grand opening for WSU Plant Bioscience

Wash Ag October 13, 2005 Governor Christine Gregoire is scheduled to deliver the keynote remarks at the grand opening ceremony of Washington State University's Plant Biosciences Building on Friday October 14th. The event will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on the building's southwest patio. Public tours and a reception will follow. Numerous other officials are also scheduled to speak. The 93-thousand square foot, four story structure houses 30 research labs and lab support areas on three secured upper floors and four major teaching labs on the first floor. The state funded facility is the first in what may eventually be a complex of seven interconnected buildings. Meanwhile, the state's dwindling support of agricultural research has WSU already working with commodity groups that have lobbyists and planning for the future. Randy Suess of the Washington Wheat Commission is part of that group. Suess: "And we are meeting with WSU and we are not just looking for this next biennium but we are working with WSU for five to ten years down the road. What is it that we really need and what can we do to help you in lobby efforts not only in Olympia but in Washington D.C. to get more dollars coming our way?" Doctor Ralph Cavalieri, Director of WSU's Ag Research Center, says half the budget of 30 years ago is going into ag research. I'm Bob Hoff.
