I’m Bob Larson. The Washington Farm Bureau is chiming in on the idea of federal officials relocating Grizzly Bears from Canada and other states into the North Cascades.

Government Relations Director, Tom Davis says it’s a terrible idea, but besides that, it flies in the face of a decades-old state law prohibiting the move …

TOM DAVIS … “But, as the federal agencies look at doing this, they’re actually violating the very spirit of our state law by looking to trans-locate Grizzly Bears into Washington. So, we think that is a bad move by a federal agency to violate an issue that the state legislature’s spoken very clearly about.”

I asked Davis what he thought about the federal report that says the harm of relocating Grizzly Bears to Washington would be “inconsequential” …

TOM DAVIS … “I picked up on the same thing. That really rubbed all of us the wrong way. If you look at the EIS and the boundaries for the recovery areas, many of the boundaries come very close to cities and towns, both on the west side of the state as well as on the east side. So, if you live very close to one of those boundary areas and you have an orchard, you run cattle, or you just have small kids around your house, inconsequential would probably not be the word that you would use.”

Davis says there are too many potential dangers. Friday is the deadline for online comments. Go to the National Parks website at nps.gov for more information.
