McLerran's Appointment Pt 2

I'm Bob Larson. A confirmation hearing today will determine whether or not former EPA regional director Dennis McLerran sits on the leadership council of the Puget Sound Partnership ... something that has farmers across the state very upset.

Save Family Farming's Gerald Baron says the governor's appointment demonstrates how out-of-touch he is with the farmer's role in protecting the environment ...

GERALD BARON ... "The real problems with the environment are urban development. And that's what the environmental activists, I should say the anti-farm activists who say they are environmentalists, are dead wrong because when they work against farmers, such as Dennis McLerran has, they're actually harmful to the environment and the Puget Sound Partnership is really making that clear."

Baron says there is a reasonable expectation that Senators from other parts of the state, who are more aware of McLerran's past, will be concerned enough to block the appointment ...

GERALD BARON ... "I think, unlike Governor Inslee, a lot of these Senators, especially from different parts of the state, are very aware of what Dennis McLerran has done to farmers through What's Upstream, through his coercive actions Yakima Dairy Farmers, how he reneged on his promise to support them against lawsuits. And so, I think that those Senators who are familiar with it and have seen how Mr. McLerran operates will be very concerned about going forward with this appointment."

Baron says what makes today's hearing promising is that most appointees serve without confirmation.
