Crowd Cow Brings Beef Directly to Consumers

After a friend bragging about the home-raised beef he had been purchasing directly from a local beef producer, Joe Heitzeberg and his friend Ethan Lowry were curious about doing the same — however, once they learned that they needed to purchase the entire carcass and determine how they wanted it cut up and to have freezer storage for it — it quickly became quite daunting.

Crowd Cow Co-founder and CEO Joe Heitzeberg says they were intrigued about knowing where their beef was produced

Heitzeberg: “I wanted to know really who produce it and why. I thought it was fascinating to know the story of the ranch. So as I was discussing this with my co-founder Ethan that we’re like, ‘Yea, that is just a wonderful thing. Why isn’t it that way already? With wine it is that way. With coffee it is that way. Why not with beef? Why not know that is Angus beef and here is the farmers and name and here is how he actually raised it. You are paying as much for that steak as you would wine. So why is it not that way.

He continues with he and Lowry’s solution to more easily connect consumers directly with beef producers.

Heitzeberg: “We should crowd fund a cow that way we can get it from a farm but everybody can have the convenience of just buying 5 pounds worth. We’ll figure out how to ship it out with dry ice and what not. So we started down that path and that was two years ago.”

They now have customers from coast to coast and work with beef producers throughout the Northwest, Northern California coast and up and down the East Coast.
