02/02/06 Washington gets one watershed for CSP

Washington February 2, 2006 Funding limitations mean only one watershed in Washington will get funding for the Conservation Security Program sign up in 2006. Dave Brown with the Washington State office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service explains which watershed is in, and which is out this year. Brown: "We had two eligible watersheds for CSP in 06. Those being the Lower Snake-Tucannon watershed and also the Naches watershed. Only one of those watersheds has been selected for signup this year and that will be the Naches watershed over in the Yakima area." Brown says the Lower Snake-Tucannon will still be a priority watershed for Washington. Nationally of the 110 watersheds that had been on the preliminary list for CSP in 2006, only 60 were selected for sign up. As for the 2006 CSP sign up period for producers in the Naches watershed: Brown: "Sign up itself is going to start February 13th and run through March 31st in our Naches watershed area. And again that is handled from our Yakima field office." Brown says the self assessment work book that is the first step in the process of applying for CSP should be on the NRCS state website.
