Winter Wheat Production Forecast as of the NASS Crop Production Report

According to Friday's latest USDA NASS Crop Production Report, USDA Chief Economist Rob Johansson says there is a promise of another good production year for the nation's winter wheat crop.

Johansson: "Last year we had a great production year. We had record production. This year crop production is at least indicating we are on the trail of another pretty good year. Lower than last year, we're not expecting a record this year but certainly higher than the last three or four years before that. Yield is up a little bit month over month, less than a percent but still up slightly — mostly in the hard red and the soft red and we're seeing a bit of a decline in the white winter wheat. "

Based on June 1st conditions, Idaho winter wheat production is forecast at 58 million bushels, down 13 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 84 bushels per acre, down 10 bushels from a year ago.

Oregon winter wheat production is expected to total 41 million bushels, up 15 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 58 bushels per acre up 8 bushels from last year.

Washington winter wheat production is forecast at 108 million bushels, down 17 percent from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 65 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from the May 1 forecast and down 13 bushels from last year.

Winter wheat production in Colorado is forecast at 78 million bushels. This forecast is 26 percent below the 105 million bushel crop produced last year. As of June 1st, the average yield is forecast at 40 bushels per acre, 8 bushels below last year's final yield.
