Purdue Praises New USMCA Deal

The U.S. and Canada have reached an agreement in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Both countries made concessions to come to an agreement like Canada ending its Class 7 milk system and allowing U.S. dairy farmers more access to its markets.

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has been praising the new deal - and not just because it's a better deal for the US dairy industry.

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue says, "We have secured greater access to these vital markets and will maintain and improve the highly productive integrated agricultural relationship we have as nations."

Perdue adds there's more for agriculture than just milk, "The agreement also preserves and expands critical access for U.S. poultry and egg producers and addresses Canada’s discriminatory wheat grading process to help U.S. wheat growers along the border become more competitive."

Canada and the United States, alongside Mexico, will step forward on a new trade agreement called USMCA.

In a release, the office of the United State Trade Representative says the deal will give workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses a high-standard trade agreement that will result in free markets, fair trade, and a robust economic growth. It claims the deal will strengthen the middle class and create good paying jobs and new opportunities for people in North America.
