With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. As the world grows, so grow the markets, something the Washington Apple Commission is acutely aware as they put together their latest strategic marketing plan ...

TODD FRYHOVER ... "We just completed our 2016 Strategic Plan. So, we reviewed the old Strategic Plan which, of course, was done in 2011, and went back and did a very thorough project with a lot of research, not only on where the markets are in the future for the next five years, but where the industry is today and where we anticipate them to be for the next five years as far as a varietal makeup goes and as well as a volume component."

Commission president Todd Fryhover says the growing number of apple varieties and an ever-changing world economy means adjustments ...

TODD FRYHOVER ... "So, essentially, when we look at some markets that are more impacted by the world trade, or have increased trade barriers, or don't have the ability to purchase some of these high value apple varieties, which are going into the ground here in Washington in earnest, then we reallocate some of those resources to the markets where there is the potential to align with the grower needs."

Fryhover says they'll present the budget at the Board of Directors meeting next month. Once approved, officials from what they consider the top five international markets will be brought to Washington to discuss needs and opportunities. We'll have details on that tomorrow.
