Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with the Open Range AgriBeef Minute. Getting youth involved in agriculture is crucial to sustaining the ag industry and according to Mary Jo Davies with the Oregon Cattlewomen’s Association, they are working to get youth active with the Beef Ambassador Contest.

DAVIES: It’s just trying to get youth involved in promoting the cattle industry from all aspects of it.

The contest is open to youth 17 to 20 with the deadline on May 15th.

DAVIES: And the end result is our first place winner wins $500 cash plus they also have an all expense paid trip to the national competition. Our second place winner is a $300 cash award.

The student then represent the state beef industry at various functions and fairs throughout the year in addition to a chance at a the national level.

DAVIES: Out of the national ones they pick one of these after they’ve done their year of the beef ambassador to go back to the USDA and be an intern for them. If you really think that you are interested in working in the agriculture industry long term it might be a foot in the door.
