8-23 SS Bird Strategies

8-23 SS Bird Strategies

Strategies for hunting waterfowl. Dave Ciani holds a degree in wildlife and fish parks management. In addition he’s worked for the department of environmental conservation in fish and wildlife parks. Most importantly he’s an expert guide and the owner of High Prairie Outfitters. Dave’s got an interesting take on blinds, decoys and strategy.  “We have aborted the layout blinds. They just have not been as effective  as they were 18 to 20 years ago. In guiding what we have done is tried to find other alternative sources of concealment. We use big they’ll blind it will conceal 7 gunners max if need be, it’s very effective, we don’t shoot them coming in in the face like traditional layout blinds, we would set it up on the outside and then have a big spread of decoys with a landing zone out in front of us so you are more shooting them coming into the side but they are still in your face close shooting. They are not coming directly at you. On the Canada and ducks. On the Snow goose hunting a lot of times what we will use is whites and backboards and covers and that way you can see the birds approaching, it is half the fun seeing them flipping air. We use the flyer decoys and motion decoys to give you some concealment, especially if there’s a little sunlight, they cast shadows and you lay under those decoys that are actually suspended on poles.  We have had very good success with those 2 setups.
