10-26 SS Bryan & Sheep 2

Happening upon a Rocky Mountain big horn ram while hiking in the far North reaches of the Rocky Mountain range in North British Columbia.

Yesterday we left off with Bryan Bartsch and his hunting partners as they were on a self-guided packing and hunting trip at approximately 6500 foot elevation in Alp-like mountains. They were not actively hunting at the time but oh what they discovery. “We started at the one lake and once we get the 2nd mountain range we realized we couldn’t get through them, the passes were too steep, we got that ram on the 3rd or 4th day, we got it while we were looking for a mountain pass to our 2nd lake, so we went up through one of the passes we thought we would go through and low and behold right on the other side was a band of 7 or 8 rams which we couldn’t get to, we were too far away, but we spent the afternoon there and it turns out that all of those rams fed right into a band of cliffs and the cliffs where they were bedding were a few hundred yards from the pass that we were in so the rams fed right into their bedding area which was right beside us. We took the ram at 150 yards and just took the cape and the horns that night but it was starting to snow so we hurried back to camp and we went up the next day to get the meat.” It’s a good thing they had the meat because they got stuck by weather and had to stay a few extra days.
