Damon Bungard works for Jackson kayak which makes a lot of kayaks designed for fishermen. And he loves fishing himself. “I have been fortunate to have caught a lot of species and a lot of places. I’ve got everything from trout to tarpon, bass, bonefish, world record Arctic Grayling in Alaska and did a lot of that from a kayak. I first got hooked on fly fishing. I grew up bass fishing. There was a Whitewater trip to Québec. We had done a five day self-support. We got flown in and dropped in a floatplane on the edge of Labrador. We paddled and camped for five days on the West Magpie and Lower Magpie rivers. The air service that flew us in also flies in people for Atlantic salmon. I saw their brochure in their airbase and there were guys holding huge Atlantic salmon and I thought, well that looks like a lot of fun. I’m just getting into fly fishing and I’m going to come back and do that so I got back from the Whitewater trip and then a week later I turned around and drove my VW minivan up to the Gaspee Peninsula in Québec. I saw my friends at Orvis beforehand and said I am going to go catch Atlantic salmon and they just laughed. They said bring a lot of beer, you’re going to do a lot of casting and not catch anything but enjoy yourself. I ended up catching a few and then landed a gorgeous 44 inch hen, beautiful, huge Atlantic salmon. After that I was hooked.
