Washington grower heads national wheat organization

Washington Ag Today July 20, 2011 Colfax, Washington farmer Randy Suess was installed as the new Chairman of U.S. Wheat Associates at the organization’s annual meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma this week. U.S. Wheat Associates is the market development arm of the U.S. wheat industry and is funded in part by wheat growers through state commodity commissions.

In a recent interview Suess said he didn’t have any specific goals in mind for U.S. Wheat but did say keeping federal funding for the Market Access Program and Foreign Market Development is important.

Suess: “I think getting these MAP and FMD dollars because without them U.S. Wheat wouldn‘t be existence. We would lose our 15 overseas offices right off the bat then where are you when it comes to exporting. If we‘ve got some good news recently it was with the new Canadian Prime Minister and maybe that will be the end of the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly. We are hoping that we can compete with them on a level playing field just like everyone else around the world.”

Suess will serve as Chairman for one year.

Preliminary entries for the 2012 Washington Cattlemen’s Association Bull Test Sale are due August 16, 2011. The preliminary entry form and $100 is due at that time. The test will be limited to 172 bulls of all breeds. Rules, regulations and entry forms may be received by contacting the WCA in Ellensburg at 509-925-9871 or email
