See Quinoa trials at WSU Organic Field Day

Washington Ag Today July 25, 2011 Washington State University’s Organic Farm Field Day at the Tukey Orchard at Pullman is coming up later this week, on Thursday July 28th.

A quinoa tour will be part of the field day at which participants can see quinoa variety trials and nitrogen trials. Quinoa is a pseudo cereal from South America which has seen soaring demand in Europe and America.

There will also be a presentation on plans for the new Smart Farm site, which will be a place-based center of hands-on learning for WSU students.

The field day is free and open to the public. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the farm at the corner of Airport and Terre View roads in Pullman this Thursday.

Just how much of a role does agriculture play in U.S. greenhouse gas emissions? Not all that much according to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. USDA environmental scientist Dr. Marlen Eve sums up the results of a report covering 2005 thru 2008.

Eve: “The role of agriculture in terms of a percentage of overall greenhouse gas emissions for the country, agriculture in the 2008 report is emitting just a little bit less proportion of the national emissions than it was in the previous report. Now down to right about six percent of our total greenhouse gas emissions come from the agricultural sector.”

That’s down from just under seven percent from the 2005 report. The new report also showed forests offset about 13 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, which is up a little, and the forested area has increased as well.
