8-25 SS Grouse Dogs

Dave Ciani is an expert guide who owns High Prairie Outfitters . They hunt pheasant, geese, duck, grouse and partridge in Saskatchewan, Canada, South Dakota and Nebraska. I love Dave’s philosophy about his hunts. There’s no guarantee to clients but there is commitment:

“ We normally don’t get going until about the 2nd week in September because we want to hunt only the best times and not having to make excuses or having to find alternate things for customers to do when they are up there.” That said, when it comes to grouse, he’s up front but has a very interesting take on hunting opportunity.  “Grouse and the Spruce grouse you can kill 10 birds a day, they do cycle about every 7 years, we are not at the peak, we are not at the bottom, we are in between and it is normally not a big issue to go out and concentrate all day on grouse hunting and if you are using pointing dogs, we have had guys get as many as 40 points in today. The birds are not as sporty as you might find in New England or even in Wisconsin or Minnesota, because they do not get hunted as much, because they do not get hammered, young birds especially will fly up into a tree and not  want to flush on occasion. When you get the older birds and the adult birds, you wouldn’t know the difference from any other bird. It does make it really nice for training young dogs and forgetting a lot of points and for those people who like to get out and work their dogs and material isn’t as important as the point, it works great.
