Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. Justin Wilson, Senior Research Analyst for the Center for Consumer Freedom and Humane Watch says the Humane Society of the United States uses a lot of dogs and cats in their advertising to divert your attention from where your money is really going.

WILSON: We thought that was really deceptive and now more than a hundred some people have actually filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission along those lines because they think there’s a whole lot of folks in the agricultural community that recognize that HSUS’ primary mission is to fundamentally alter the role that animals have in our diet and the role farmers have with respect to the humane treatment of their animals.

Wilson says that HSUS seems to think of every farmer as a butcher.

WILSON: And of course that’s not the case and it seems really frustrating for folks in the agricultural community and frankly. And that when HSUS tries to make it more complicated or more expensive or less tasteful which I think is the three main ways they do it, people get justifiably outraged.

The main message is to know what your contributions are really paying for and that the decisions are yours.

WILSON: What we seek to do is put the ethical decisions about the foods that we eat into the hands of consumers. We should trust people to make decisions for themselves.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
