Fruit Notes

Fruit Notes. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

I always seem to have a lot of small notes about meetings and announcements that I never seem to get to for full stories so in an effort to get this information out there, I present some Fruit Notes…

The Fish & Wildlife Commission is scheduled to take action Friday, November 13th, on proposed changes to the agency's procedures for assessing and paying for damage caused by deer and elk to commercial crops. One change that should be noted is WAC 232-36-110 (7)(b), which will force producers to pay up to $600 toward the cost of the adjustor conducting the damage claim assessment. This has previously been paid by the department as part of its responsibility for managing wildlife, but under the proposed change half of this cost would be deducted from growers' damage claims.

Registration for the WSTFA 111th Annual Meeting is open but the early bird registration ends as of today. You will also want to download the WSTFA app so you can easily keep track of all the sessions.

And a new video, Fieldworker Orientation & Food Safety Training Video - is now available. The new video consists of 5 bi-lingual modules, that together comply with the criteria for food safety set by GlobalG.A.P. and has been reviewed by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and Labor & Industries. These engaging and informative stand-alone modules vary in length from 2 to 12 minutes, covering food safety, heat-related illness, orchard ladder safety, lifting techniques, and platform safety. You can purchase the DVD from the Washington State Tree Fruit Association.
