02/09/06 Ethanol bill clears first hurdle

The Idaho Senate Transportation Committee has sent an ethanol related bill to the full Senate with a recommendation that it be approved. That's a switch for the committee which killed similar legislation last year. Two Treasure Valley representatives, Republican John McGee and Democrat David Langhorst voted for the plan this week, a plan that creates an ethanol standard for Idaho. It would specify that the state's gasoline contain a ten percent blend of ethanol. McGee changed his vote after he was convinced that ethanol would have no adverse effects on the Boise Valley air quality. University of Idaho agricultural scientists will present a wide range of nutrient-management research next month in Twin Falls. The March 7th conference will feature presentations on crop, livestock and integrated systems. Speakers will discuss the management of nitrogen, rations, irrigation, wastewater and crop rotations. This is an all day conference and you do need to register with U of I soils specialist Jason Ellsworth at 736-3600. The federal grazing fee for 2006 in Idaho and other western states for land managed by the BLM and Forest Service is set. It will be $1.56 per animal unit month, down from $1.79 in 2005.
