Yesterday we learned about barley economics from Representative of the National Barley Growers Association, Tom Hance. Today he talks about what the association is advocating for in the 2023 Farm Bill.

“Crop insurance starts at the top of the list making sure that we don't go backwards that there's no cuts or infringement on crop insurance and if possible to strengthen and expand crop insurance then within title one the farm prams making sure that those programs continue to be structured in a way that maintains equity and parity among the different crops so that the markets determining the with the farmer plants, not the potential foreign program payout.”

In addition, Hance says that research funding is a priority for the US barley industry.

“Well, every year we work in the annual appropriations process to get funding for barley research initiatives. So we have a wheat and barley scab initiative that is authorizing the farm bill and then funded annually in the agricultural appropriations bill, working with other industry stakeholders to continue to support funding for that as well as a barley pest initiative. So those research initiatives are are an annual priority.”

He also says that transportation supply chain issues and regulations are all continuous things that they monitor on behalf of us barley producers.
