NW Fire Update and a Idaho Calf Roping to Benefit Beef Counts, I’m Matt Rice and with today’s Northwest Report, filling in for Gregg Martin.

There are approximately 11 active large fires in Oregon and Washington, while Idaho is getting the fallout of the smoke in the Panhandle . The Phillips Creek Fire has burned 1,100 acres and threatened dozens of buildings seven miles northwest of the town of Elgin in northeastern Oregon. Meanwhile, campgrounds, homes and business’s at Lake Chelan, Washington’s popular summer recreation area are receiving evacuation notices as the 24,0000 acre Wolverine Fire continues to grow. In Southern Oregon, near Roseburg the Stouts Fire has burned over 15,000 acres. Nearly 1,500 firefighters are working round the clock, yet by yesterday afternoon it was only 5 % contained. Across the Northern Panhandle air quality is forecast to remain Moderate to Unhealthy due to Washington State fires.

The 4th Annual Caring Cowboys Beef Counts Open Calf Roping will take place August 16th at the Jerome Idaho County Fairgrounds to benefit Beef Counts, an organization that provides beef to the Idaho Foodbank. In its fourth year the Caring Cowboys Open Calf Roping brings over 40 top professional calf ropers, including Jake Hannum, Shane Hanchey, Ryan Jarrett, and Tyson Durfey, in one arena for an afternoon of World Class calf roping to benefit Idaho’s Beef Industry United Against Hunger. Live and Silent Auctions, including a Cowboy Auction, will begin at 3 p.m. followed by the Open Roping at 4 p.m. “Caring Cowboys have donated over 90,000 servings of beef since this tradition started 4 years ago.
